1. General Information about studying at Mersin University

1.2. Academic Calendar

Winter Semester (Semester One)

Start: mid September

End: mid January

Summer Semester (Semester Two)

Start: mid February

End:  mid June




1.2. Turkish Classes for Exchange/ERASMUS Students

In general classes at the University of Mersin are instructed in Turkish.

For exchange students special ERASMUS Turkish classes will be offered during the term (6 academic hours per week) at several levels. Students who pass the examination at the end of the semester will get an ECTS certificate and 3 ECTS credit points.

1.3. Courses

The academic year consists of two terms: the winter and the summer semester. In general, the winter semester is from mid-September until late-January. The summer semester begins mid-February and ends early June. In between are two weeks semester holidays.

Please note: You receive „ ECTS Certificates“  only if you attend the courses regularly and pass the exam. Please inform the lecturers in time that you want to attend the exam.

1.4. Examination Periods

There are two examination periods at the Mersin University :

• At the end of the winter term (beginning of January until mid-January).

• At the end of the summer term (mid-May until beginning of June)

The exact dates will be published on the  notice boards in each department.

As an exchange student, you are allowed to participate in any exam once arrangements have been made with the teacher concerned.




2. Accomodation in Mersin

International Office will help you to find a convienient accomodation.

2.1 Halls of Residence

You will find in Mersin different private halls of residence located in Çiftlikköy near by the main campus or in the center. They are offering various  opportunities like single rooms, two bed or four bed rooms.  The average price for room is between 100- 200 €.

2.2 Flat Sharing

In Mersin it is common that students share apartments (separated by genders!). Sometimes it is cheaper to rent one big apartment and share it with others. If you are interested in flat sharing, please contact the Erasmus Office. We will try to get you in contact with Turkish students.

3. How do I get to Mersin?

3.1. Visa

Please ensure in advance whether you need a visa for your entry to Turkey. If you need a visa, please apply for a visa at the Turkish Embassy in your home country at least eight weeks before your departure to Turkey. Please note that you have to leave Turkey after three months when you enter as a tourist.

3.2. Arrival by plane:

Adana Airport is situated about 90 km from Mersin and offers different connections to various destinations. The airport is connected to Mersin by shuttle-busses of the airlines.

4. FORMALITIES AND PROCEDURES

4.1. BEFORE ARRIVAL:

  1. Students who would like to attend Erasmus Student Exchange programme at Mersin University have to fill and send the application documents (application form, Learning Agreement, passport size Photo, accommodation form) to Mersin University Erasmus Office. Application deadlines:

Winter semester or full academic year: 15 July

Summer semester: 15 November

Received application documents will be checked by the departmental coordinator and Acceptance Letter will be sent.

4.2. ARRIVAL

  1. Students have to visit Erasmus Office firstly after they arrive to Mersin University. They have to get Erasmus Student Identity Cards and necessary documents for residence permit. With Erasmus Student Identity Cards students take advantage at dining hall, library, campus entrance, sport complex and discounts at transportation
  2. After Erasmus Office, students have to visit departmental coordinator to have information about courses, department, and academic staff.

RESIDENCE PERMIT

  1. Students have to visit to Mersin police department for residence permit as soon as possible. Student Buddy’s will help you for permit procedure.

4.3. BEFORE DEPARTURE

  1. After the semester students have to take Confirmation Letter, signed and sealed Learning Agreement from Erasmus office.  Transcript of Records will be sent to incoming students’ home university by post.

5. Assistance for Exchange Students

The International office is eager to support, help, and advise you with the intention that your stay in Mersin may be an enrichment for your life, studies, and personality.

5. 1. Buddy Program                                                  

At the University of Mersin, there is a Buddy Program. This program matches exchange students with Turkish students. Your buddy volunteers pick you up when you arrive and help you with various matters.

You will receive the Email address of your “Buddy” before your arrival so that you can contact him or her in advance. If for any reasons you cannot get in contact with your “Buddy”, contact with the Erasmus Office.

6. Departure

Before you leave you’ll have to arrange some matters:

  1. In order to earn credit for your achievements you have to meet your professors again. Please complete your Transcript of Records (ToR) with classes, the various grades of academic achievement and the ECTS – points and obtain a signature of your professor. You need to get you signed ToR from Erasmus Office.
  2. Please get a “Certificate of Attendance” mentioning of stay in Mersin from the Erasmus Office.
