Department of Biotechnology

About Biotechnology:

Biotechnology is defined as "technological applications that utilize biological systems and living organisms or derivatives to transform or create products or processes for specific use."

Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary field that encompasses a wide range of disciplines, from basic sciences such as Physics, Chemistry, and Biology to Medical and Engineering sciences. It includes various subfields such as Nanobiotechnology, Genetic engineering, Biomedical engineering, and Protein engineering. Microbial and Enzyme Biotechnology focuses on the production and modification of economically valuable enzymes derived from various organisms for use in various industrial sectors. Biotechnology finds application in diverse forms, ranging from the biological treatment of wastes to food production requiring fermentation. Modern biotechnology techniques enable modifications that cannot be achieved through traditional breeding methods or natural reproductive processes.

Biotechnology has entered the field of medicine by providing alternative kits and drugs for the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases. Genomic and Proteomic applications of biotechnology are used in the treatment of human diseases, particularly in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and genetic diseases, as well as in identifying the sources of these diseases. Another application is the production of vaccines using Recombinant DNA technology.
